Bio-diesel is a form of diesel fuel derived from plants or animals and consisting of long-chain fatty acid esters. It is typically made by chemically reacting lipids such as animal fat (tallow), soybean oil, or some other vegetable oil with an alcohol, producing a methyl, ethyl or propyl ester.

Unlike the vegetable and waste oils used to fuel converted diesel engines, bio diesel is a drop-in bio fuel, meaning it is compatible with existing diesel engines and distribution infrastructure. Bio diesel can be used alone or blended with petrol diesel in any proportions. Bio diesel blends can also be used as heating oil.


Problems In Bio-Diesel

  • Material compatibility is still one of the serious problems in the application of bio diesel on diesel engine. One of the main causes of the problem is related to the flow-ability and filter ability of bio diesel.
  • Due to its physical and flow properties, bio diesel potentially caused a blockage in the filter higher than petro-diesel. Typical fuel oil filter used is a cartridge with media made from porous synthetic materials.
  • Contamination of the finished product with ingredients from the manufacturing process (such as methanol, glycerol or metallic soaps) can cause serious fuel system and injector problems.
